Who is Zara Rutherford?

Zara Rutherford is a young woman of British-Belgian descent, only 19 years old, is the daughter of pilot parents, and seeks to become the first young woman to travel the world alone. In this journey, he seeks to pass through the five continents and also, visit around 52 countries.

Rutherford began this journey on August 18, where he departed from Belgium on a plane called “Shark-080” and has since made landfall in Mexico, Russia, Alaska, Taiwan, and other countries.

For Zara, it has been more than an adventure and expresses that: “I was trapped in Alaska due to visa and weather problems for a month and I was trapped in Russia for a month due to visa and weather problems.”

More than a world record …

Rutherford seeks to break the record of Shaesta Waiz, who 4 years ago flew alone around the world at the age of 30. Today, Travis Ludlow is the youngest person to fly alone in the world. He did it in 149 days, this same year and at just 18 years old.

 Zara, in addition to wanting to break the world record, seeks to motivate the new generation of women to take an interest in studying and working in the aeronautical industry. It also invites you to prepare to be part of the present of aviation, sending a message of equality.

The largest private plane in the world has arrived

The American aircraft manufacturer Gulfstream takes up the leadership of innovation by presenting its new business class jet baptized as G700 that has a range of 14,000 km and can fly almost at the speed of sound. While its occupants enjoy the largest cabin of the design for this type of aircraft.

The Gulfstream G700 can carry up to 13 passengers or eight sleeper seats in a cabin that can be customized with up to 5 zones of enjoyment such as a dedicated space for the crew. An entertainment area, a dining room, and conferences of 6 people, and a cabin with a full-length closet. 

In terms of design you can enjoy natural stone floors in the kitchen and bathrooms, quartz countertops, handcrafted electric seats, surround sound, a new ultra high definition circadian lighting system, and the newest ventilation system that does not recycle the air, but expels it and replaces it with 100% new air.

The motorization of this aircraft is in charge of Rolls – Royce with the new engines called Pearl 700 that seek a new speed record reaching a mach of 0.935. In addition, this new jet will be able to make use of sustainable fuel.

Currently, Gulfstream is conducting a presentation tour for clients and potential clients, where it has already visited Doha for the Qatar Executive where it reached a new record between the city of Savannah, Georgia, and Doha in a time of 13 hr and 16 min. 

After visiting the Qatar Executive, the G700 flew to Paris, France, also achieving a record by completing the tour in just 6 hr and 15 min.

At the moment the company is carrying out its certification program that will cover more than 15,500 tests and with which it intends to guarantee the greatest safety and comfort to its most exclusive clients.

 

Energia Family, the new family of ecological airplanes

The Brazilian aeronautical manufacturer Embraer in association with certain institutes and companies in the industry. Presented a new project based on a family of concept aircraft to help the industry achieve its goal of zero net carbon emissions by 2050.

“Energia Family” is made up of four concept aircraft of different sizes and with different propulsion technologies:

Electric energy: it proposes zero CO2 emissions.

Hydrogen fuel cell: it proposes zero CO2 emissions.

Dual fuel gas turbine: proposes up to 100% reduction in CO2 emissions

Hybrid-electric: proposes up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions.

“Our role is to develop innovative technologies to help the industry achieve its sustainability goals … That is why our Energía family is such an important platform,” said Luis Carlos Affonso, Senior Vice President of Engineering, Technology, and Corporate Strategy at Embraer.

Energia Family is still in the design phase. However, Embraer has already made progress in reducing emissions from its aircraft by testing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and its goal is to make all Embraer aircraft compatible. with the SAF by 2030.

Spirit of Innovation beats the world record 

The Spirit of Innovation beat the world record and since November 16, it has become the world’s fastest electric aircraft in its category.

The creators of this aircraft are the project team ACCEL and Rolls-Royce, who are also the engine manufacturer for the Spirit of Innovation.

The part of the financing of this project is in charge of the Institute of Aerospace Technology. 

Also,  has the collaboration of the Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Industrial Strategy of the United Kingdom and Innovates UK. 

The Spirit of Innovation broke three world records, among which the following stand out: 

  • It reached a speed of 555.9 km / h in 3 kilometers. This title was held by the Siemens Extra 330LE aircraft in 2017. 
  • The second record was reaching 532.1 km / h in 15 kilometers. 
  • Finally, the Spirit of Innovation surpassed in 60 seconds, the ascent of 3,000 meters in a time of 202 seconds. 

In this regard, Warren East, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce, expressed appreciation for the recognition of this new world record: “Setting the world speed record for an all-electric vehicle is a fantastic achievement for the ACCEL team and Rolls-Royce. I would like to thank our partners, and especially for Electroflight helping us achieve this pioneering breakthrough.”

Puerto Felixstowe invests in machinery

The initiative for the improvement of environmental conditions is an issue on which everyone is debating, and many organizations come together to implement the best strategies to combat pollution.

A new infrastructure

Thailand plans to open a national shipping company

Thailand plans to open a national shipping company, to minimize dependence on foreign vessels. The announcement of this new plan was made by the Ministry of Transport of Thailand, adding that another objective is to encourage commercial exchange in Thailand.

Although it is still in the study phase, Saksayam Chidchob, Thailand’s Transport Minister, said that the Thai port authorities have already received instruction to assess the viability of a shipping line during the next month.

If feasible, the national shipping company would have three independent branches, the first for cargo movement in the Asian region, the second for cabotage, and the last for exchange with other regions worldwide.

Subsequently, once the feasibility tests have been carried out by the competent authorities, they may be presented to the cabinet during the first months of 2022.

If the procedure is positive, the creation of a national shipping company in Thailand would begin in the middle of the year.

As mentioned in previous lines, it is not only about the independence of foreign ships, but also about promoting maritime trade in Thailand.

Wing of Tomorrow: The New Green Airplane Wing

Airbus has started the process of assembling its prototype “green wing” within its “Wing of Tomorrow” technology research program.

This program will test each of the wing aerodynamic materials and technologies while investigating how to improve wing fabrication to meet future demand as the industry recovers.

Airbus plans to build three life-size prototypes: the first will be used to study systems integration, the second will undergo structural testing, and the third will be assembled to test increased production and compare it with industrial models.

Wing of Tomorrow is part of several Airbus divisions in different parts of the world, including the Wing Moveables team, based in Germany. It also has the financial support of the UK Institute of Aerospace Technology, which will bring together more than 100 technological applications, to explore new manufacturing and assembly techniques, to promote more sustainable aviation.

The first autonomous ships are ready to set sail

After many tests of autonomous navigation, the first ships without crew members are ready to set sail and begin to serve next October.

This type of autonomous vessel has been developed mainly for the transport of river, and coastal cargo and according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) it has been working continuously since 2017 to guarantee that this type of vessel has a safe operation. Through constant evaluation of the various electronic devices that make autonomy a reality, such as in the implementation of international regulations, autonomous ships are a reality that is not only limited to their innovation since ports must also be prepared to meet this type of boat.

At the moment, the pioneering countries in this matter are China, Norway, and Japan, focusing their development on autonomous maritime surface ships (MASS), considering that an autonomous ship is a ship that can navigate without depending on human interaction. However, there are 4 types of autonomy for these boats: The first refers to those that have a crew, but their navigation system has automated processes that help in decision-making. Second, are ships that have seafarers on board, but the vessel is remotely controlled. Third, are those ships that are remotely controlled and have no crew on board. While the last type of ship is those 100% autonomous, capable of making decisions and determining actions by itself.

Whatever the degree of autonomy of these vessels, they must all be equipped to a lesser or greater extent with various technological tools such as: the internet, GPS, big data, artificial intelligence, IOT, sensors, robotics, and different software and hardware that will not only allow the navigation but its constant development.

It should be noted that this type of innovation will have a direct impact on the workforce of seafarers since although the ships will not have a crew on board, this type of development will always generate new jobs, only that they will be different, they will imply less physical strength and greater technological skills, but we will see the direction it takes as these changes become irreversible.

 

The US will reduce emissions generated by aviation

The United States announced its goal of reducing aviation-generated pollutant emissions by 20% by 2030, to reach net neutrality by 2050.

According to the US president, they are seeking to establish tax credits to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), to offset the high production costs of this hydrocarbon.

SAF is a type of fuel made from used cooking oil and animal fats. But compared to traditional jet fuel it can be between two and five times more expensive.

With the use of this fuel, it is expected that in 30 years the American Union will eliminate the use of fossil fuels in aviation.

The United States government expects to supply approximately three billion gallons of SAF annually through 2030 and enough by 2050 to meet 100% demand for aviation fuels.
