Boeing is working on new versions of its 787 Dreamliner

Boeing is working on new, much more operational versions of its 787 Dreamliner.

The CEO of the aircraft manufacturer, Stan Deal, stated during an interview conducted by The Seattle Times that Boeing is currently designing a larger version, the 787-10, where it will increase its payload and range to make it more competitive against the Airbus A350. -900.

Until now, Boeing has not disclosed the in-depth technical details of this project. However, since 2019 the US manufacturer’s commitment to increasing the operating weight and range of the 787-10 to obtain an order from Air New has been known. Zealand.

Technology in the airport sector

A new year begins, and expectations for all sectors worldwide are preparing to face a new moment. New goals are on the horizon and, technology will be a fundamental part of the development of new projects.

Such is the case of the airport sector, which has used technological advances to safely manage administrative processes. Also take care of the health of each passenger, providing new protocols to avoid large-scale contagion.

For a few months, airports have started technological development, and today, we tell you what some of them are.

Biometric technology

Thanks to facial recognition, the airport administration will be able to reduce waiting times and long queues at check-in, security controls, baggage claim, and those waiting processes that can be tedious.

To date, a survey conducted by IATA shows that at least 73% of passengers are willing to share their data to optimize waiting processes at the airport.

Artificial Intelligence

The use of artificial intelligence to manage the flow of passengers is also one of the options that have been implemented at different airports for some time.

The London’s Gatwick airport, which will implement this technology to improve the safety of its operations, and provide a better travel experience to its passengers.

Artificial intelligence is linked to ‘Big Data’, where the flow of information will be key to managing data and passenger behavior and optimizing their strategies.

Smartphone integration

Today, most people around the world have a smartphone. The use of mobile applications will be the first step to manage connectivity with organizations and automate airport services.

These are just a few examples of new technologies that are already being used at airports. Therefore, the use of new technologies is and will be a fundamental part of the growth of the airport sector, where innovation will serve to create new experiences.

Energia Family, the new family of ecological airplanes

The Brazilian aeronautical manufacturer Embraer in association with certain institutes and companies in the industry. Presented a new project based on a family of concept aircraft to help the industry achieve its goal of zero net carbon emissions by 2050.

“Energia Family” is made up of four concept aircraft of different sizes and with different propulsion technologies:

Electric energy: it proposes zero CO2 emissions.

Hydrogen fuel cell: it proposes zero CO2 emissions.

Dual fuel gas turbine: proposes up to 100% reduction in CO2 emissions

Hybrid-electric: proposes up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions.

“Our role is to develop innovative technologies to help the industry achieve its sustainability goals … That is why our Energía family is such an important platform,” said Luis Carlos Affonso, Senior Vice President of Engineering, Technology, and Corporate Strategy at Embraer.

Energia Family is still in the design phase. However, Embraer has already made progress in reducing emissions from its aircraft by testing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and its goal is to make all Embraer aircraft compatible. with the SAF by 2030.

Spirit of Innovation beats the world record

The Spirit of Innovation beat the world record and since November 16, it has become the world’s fastest electric aircraft in its category.

The creators of this aircraft are the project team ACCEL and Rolls-Royce, who are also the engine manufacturer for the Spirit of Innovation.

The part of the financing of this project is in charge of the Institute of Aerospace Technology.

Also,  has the collaboration of the Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Industrial Strategy of the United Kingdom and Innovates UK.

The Spirit of Innovation broke three world records, among which the following stand out:

  • It reached a speed of 555.9 km / h in 3 kilometers. This title was held by the Siemens Extra 330LE aircraft in 2017.
  • The second record was reaching 532.1 km / h in 15 kilometers.
  • Finally, the Spirit of Innovation surpassed in 60 seconds, the ascent of 3,000 meters in a time of 202 seconds.

In this regard, Warren East, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce, expressed appreciation for the recognition of this new world record: “Setting the world speed record for an all-electric vehicle is a fantastic achievement for the ACCEL team and Rolls-Royce. I would like to thank our partners, and especially for Electroflight helping us achieve this pioneering breakthrough.”

Without a doubt, the Spirit of Innovation electric plane has advanced technology that makes Jet Zero a reality.

Automation of the airline industry

The airline industry has been forced to digitize and automate each of its processes, to reduce physical contact, to protect those involved, preventing the spread of covid-19, and, in turn, improve the user experience and boost efficiency.

SITA, an international telecommunications company that provides technology services to companies in the aeronautical industry, says that the fall in demand for this industry in 2020 has forced them to focus on new cost efficiencies.

“In addition to the pressure, airlines and airports had to quickly incorporate new sanitary measures, such as contactless processing of passengers and the management of health information and new protocols, including PCR tests in many destinations,” said David Lavorel, CEO of SITA Airports and Borders.

To solve these challenges, the aviation industry turned to technology and, in many cases, changed the investment priorities they had set in 2020.

In this sense, many airports and airlines are interested in investing in biometric technology, implementing automated boarding gates, and guaranteeing a check-in process without physical contact, as well as self-service baggage delivery.

“Most airlines plan to send real-time notifications to passengers directly to their mobile devices about the status of their bags, and they also plan to provide real-time baggage tracking information to staff,” SITA noted.

It is estimated that by the year 2023, all essential customer service services will be without physical contact, from reservation to arrival, including delayed baggage reporting.
