The largest private plane in the world has arrived

The American aircraft manufacturer Gulfstream takes up the leadership of innovation by presenting its new business class jet baptized as G700 that has a range of 14,000 km and can fly almost at the speed of sound. While its occupants enjoy the largest cabin of the design for this type of aircraft.

The Gulfstream G700 can carry up to 13 passengers or eight sleeper seats in a cabin that can be customized with up to 5 zones of enjoyment such as a dedicated space for the crew. An entertainment area, a dining room, and conferences of 6 people, and a cabin with a full-length closet.

After visiting the Qatar Executive, the G700 flew to Paris, France, also achieving a record by completing the tour in just 6 hr and 15 min.

At the moment the company is carrying out its certification program that will cover more than 15,500 tests and with which it intends to guarantee the greatest safety and comfort to its most exclusive clients.

 

Fly more polluting less

During 2019, the air sector transported 4,500 million passengers, which meant the production of 900 million tons of CO2. Which would be approximately 2% of global carbon emissions.

By 2050, it is estimated that the number of passengers will double, which would also mean doubling the emission of CO2. This prediction sparked environmental mobilization, with campaigns such as “Flygskam” (embarrassment to travel by plane), in Sweden during 2018.

For this reason, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has committed to achieving “net zero emissions” of CO2 by 2050.

What are the instruments to achieve it?

Europeans hope that technology and infrastructure improvements – whether with new materials, cheaper engines, better air traffic management, hydrogen-fueled aircraft, or a greater role for electrical power – will help reduce by half the emissions.

However, IATA believes that only 14% of the objective will be achieved since to achieve “net zero emissions”, the sector’s plans go through carbon offset mechanisms (such as planting trees), something criticized by environmental NGOs. Who considers that the only thing that is achieved is to displace the problem.

“The only silver bullet to decarbonize aviation is sustainable fuels,” explains Brian Moran, in charge of sustainable development at Boeing.

IATA estimates that two-thirds of the decarbonization effort should fall on sustainable aviation fuels (CAS), produced from cooking oil, algae, wood waste, or “biomass” products.

For its part, the European Commission plans to establish an obligation to incorporate 2% of CAS in aviation kerosene in 2025, 5% in 2030, and 63% in 2050. Boeing and Airbus foresee that their planes will be able to fly with 100% of CAS at the end of that decade.

CAS currently costs four times as much as kerosene, and what is more delicate, it is not easy to get them. They represent less than 0.1% of the 360,000 million liters of fuel used by aviation in 2019.

A whole new sector must emerge, to increase production and lower the price.

The EU believes this can be achieved through new taxes on kerosene for domestic flights, while the United States proposes tax breaks.

Thailand plans to open a national shipping company

Thailand plans to open a national shipping company, to minimize dependence on foreign vessels. The announcement of this new plan was made by the Ministry of Transport of Thailand, adding that another objective is to encourage commercial exchange in Thailand.

Although it is still in the study phase, Saksayam Chidchob, Thailand’s Transport Minister, said that the Thai port authorities have already received instruction to assess the viability of a shipping line during the next month.

If feasible, the national shipping company would have three independent branches, the first for cargo movement in the Asian region, the second for cabotage, and the last for exchange with other regions worldwide.

Subsequently, once the feasibility tests have been carried out by the competent authorities, they may be presented to the cabinet during the first months of 2022.

If the procedure is positive, the creation of a national shipping company in Thailand would begin in the middle of the year.

The new series of aircraft owes its surname to the “New Engine Option” concept, which refers to engines that are 17% more efficient with the use of lighter, stronger, and more durable materials. On the other hand, this new fleet of Airplanes also represents benefits, since it has Slim Seats that are thinner and offer up to 5 cm extra for the legs, all seats are reclining and have a USB port. They also have a new cabin configuration called “Cabin-flex” that provides greater comfort for passengers.

 

The first flying car takes the skies

Thanks to some futuristic comics and movies, we have all dreamed of the time when we could travel from one place to another in our flying car. That moment has arrived thanks to the Slovakian company Klein Vision, which presents the first flying car to complete an intercity flight.

It was last June when the AirCar took off from the airport in the city of Nitra to land about half an hour later at Bratislava airport and then complete its journey by road. During this 80 km flight, the AirCar reached an altitude of 2,500 mt, at a cruising speed of up to 190 km/h. The AirCar became the prototype to pass the R&D phase after completed more than 40 hours of test flights and 142 landings.

How did they achieve the first flying car?

The AirCar Prototype 1 is powered by a 160 hp BMW gasoline engine with a fixed propeller and also has an advanced technological and automated system to deploy or hide its wings, depending on whether it is used for air or road. This transformation process only takes less than 3 minutes, and the car is ready to take off or make its road trip or even park in a normal parking space.

It is expected that this prototype will have some adjustments that will improve its autonomy. For now, we know that its BMW engine will be replaced by a BMW gasoline engine of 300CV which will increase the speed to about 300 km/h with an approximate autonomy of 1000 km.

Given the success of these tests, the company Klein Vision ensures that in the coming months may present the first production model in series and will have different configurations, both in 2 or 4 seats. However, now the issue will reside in the homologation of the regulations of the different countries to circulate by air, which could delay the time when we can enjoy this breakthrough.

 

The first 100% electric ferry

The German shipping company Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe (BSB) is carrying out the construction of the first 100% electric ferry powered by photovoltaic solar energy, which will carry up to 300 passengers through the Bodensee lake of Constance, which has a length of 63 kilometers.

It will have its catamaran design, with a length of 30 meters long and 8 meters wide, which will become the largest electric ferry manufactured by the Ostseestaal KG shipyard.

IATA Partners with Airbus and Boeing to Manage Covid-19 Risks

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), Airbus and Boeing, have developed risk management models for Covid-19 to demonstrate the different systems that ensure the safety of air transport while restoring global connectivity.

The Airbus model demonstrates that the risk of virus transmission can be significantly reduced through data-driven detection and protection measures.

For its part, the Boeing model assesses the effectiveness of passenger screening and quarantines in countries around the world. It has several factors, such as the effectiveness of PCR and rapid antigen tests and the chronology of illness for passengers traveling with COVID-19.

“There is no single solution to manage the different levels of risk. The economic and social cost of the general measures taken by most governments to date has been unnecessarily high. With this modeling,  that we can be smart with calibrated travel policies that address risk, enable travel, and protect people. That is the way back to normality,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director-General.

For now, Boeing is modeling scenarios with vaccinated travelers. As data on new COVID-19 variants become available, it will also be incorporated into these models.

The cruise industry after the pandemic
